Disable Update and restart and Update and shut down in Windows 10

You can disable the Refresh and Restart and Refresh and Shut Down commands in the Windows 10 Start menu if they bother you. If you follow the instructions in this article, they will never appear in the power options and right-click menu of the Start button.

By default, Windows 10 is set to install updates automatically. When Windows 10 installs cumulative updates and security updates, it often needs to reboot to update the system files it uses and apply the changes.

When restarting is necessary, Windows 10 displays a message allowing you to restart immediately or choose a convenient time for a scheduled restart.

In addition, Windows 10 changes the power settings and adds two additional options to the Start menu and the right-click Start menu. The new entries are Update and Restart and Update and Close. They remain visible until you finish installing updates in Windows 10.

If you don’t want to see them, there are two ways to hide these menu items in the power options. The first method works for all editions of Windows 10, including Windows 10 Home. The other includes the gpedit.msc utility, which is not available in some editions of the operating system (for example, Windows 10 Home).

In this post, you will learn how to disable the Refresh and Restart and Refresh and Shutdown commands in the Windows 10 Start menu.

Turn off updating and shutting down in Windows 10

  1. Download the following registration files.
  2. Unlock the downloaded ZIP archive.
  3. Unzip the contents to a folder of your choice.
  4. Double-click the Update and shutdown.reg disable file to prevent Windows 10 from adding the Update and restart and Update and shutdown commands to the Start menu.
  5. Exit and log back in to apply the changes.

There is also an undo file, Restore Defaults.reg, which restores the default behavior of the Start menu.

So the above method works for all versions of Windows 10, including Windows 10 Home. This is how it works.

How it works

The above registry files modify the following registry key:

If there is no AU connection, you will need to create one manually. Under the AU key, a 32-bit DWORD parameter NoAUShutdownOption must be created and set to 1.

Finally, if you are using the Pro, Education, or Enterprise edition of Windows 10, you can use the local group policy editor gpedit.msc to configure the behavior of the upgrade options via the GUI.

Disable power supply options in the local Group Policy editor

  1. Open the local Group Policy Editor.
  2. On the left side, go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update Category.

  1. On the right side of the page, in the Windows shutdown policy, look for the Don’t show updates and shutdown option.
  2. Double-click it and select Enabled to activate the policy, then click OK and Apply.Disable update and restart and Disable update and restart
  3. The amendment should take effect immediately.

Here’s how.
